Tips and tricks for the iPhone 3G

Yep, I’m one of these geeks who own an iPhone.

Below is a summary of the best tips & tricks I gathered and which proved useful in my case.

Credits go to, and

1. Increase the battery life

  • Turn on 3G only when you need it.
  • Turn off Location Services
  • Turn off the screen’s Auto-Brightness. Manually move the slider to 25% or 33% brightness
  • Turn off WiFi until you need a hotspot. Otherwise, the iPhone’s WiFi will automatically try connecting to SSIDs it detects.
  • Turn off Push. Change your Fetch schedule to Manually.
  • Set Auto-Lock to 1 minute.
  • Turn off Bluetooth if you don’t use it.
  • Limit GPS use unless you really need it.
  • Turn OFF the equalizer if you don’t use it.
  • Do a monthly battery calibration. According to the Apple website, you should be doing this periodically. Give your iPhone a full charge, then let the battery run out. Then recharge.
Usually with lithium-ion batteries this is not necessary as they maintain no “memory effect”…but it’s worth a shot.

2. Speed Up iPhone 3G Syncing in iTunes

  1. Connect your iPhone 3G to your computer.
  2. Once connected, uncheck the “Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected” box under Options.
  3. Unplug iPhone and plug back in. Right click on the iPhone in the left menu, and choose ‘Reset Warnings’.
  4. Click sync in the bottom right hand corner–this will incur a pop up window. Untick the “Do not ask me again” box and then click on Don’t Send. That’s it!

  1. Re-tick the box in Step 2 for “Automatically sync…”

3. Take a screenshot

Can be handy if you want to document something…

All you need to do is Hold the “home” button, then hit the “power/sleep” button. The screen will momentarily flash, the iPhone’s current screen contents will be saved to the Camera Roll.

4. While screen is locked, display music and volume control keys

When you’re listening to music with the screen locked, pressing the Home button “awakes” the iPhone and you will see the album artwork. If you however press the Home button twice, a set of music & volume controls will appear. This also works nicely if you have no music playing yet; you will be able to push the Play button without having to unlock the iPhone yet and navigate to the iPod menu…
